Chapter 2 of Dean Holland’s book, “The Iceberg Effect” talks exclusively about what must go on in the mind of a successful Affiliate marketer. There is a paragraph or multiple paragraphs under the headings “Becoming A Winner”, “Growth Vs. Fixed Mindset”, “Fears”, “Attitude”, “Think Positive Thoughts”, and “Take Responsibility”.
Now here’s a summary of Chapter 3 – “Finding Your Why”.
Introduction
If most people, including Dean, just after they had started trying to start a business, were asked why they had decided to start their venture, they would probably answer that they just wanted to make some more money and, perhaps, one day, be able to quit their day job and become their own boss. They would have little idea of how much money they would need to make, or what they wanted to do with money after making it. However, unless newbie entrepreneurs, be they on or off-line, have a good idea of how much they want to make, and, more importantly, WHY they want to make it and what they want to do with it, they are much more prone to let themselves fail and find problems they encounter to be insurmountable.
Discovering Your Why
Once you have discovered your “true why” you’ll find it easier to stay on track, avoiding deviation or temporary lack of enthusiasm. To help you discover your “true why”, Dean has designed a simple exercise that he explains in detail using himself as the subject. Later on in the Chapter, he provides a few blank but lined pages so the reader can repeat the exercise using themselves as the subject.
Dean starts by asking himself the question, “Why do you want an Internet business?”
Dean replies to himself, “Because I hate my job.”
Dean then asks himself the single-word question, Why?
Dean replies, “Because I don’t make enough money to live how I want to live.
Dean then repeats the single word question, Why?
This continues with another answer followed by five further questions of “Why?”
The final answer is, “Because I don’t want to be a failure and lose everything that I love.”
This last answer is Dean’s “true why”. This is what has kept him on track all these years of sweat and tears, propelling him forward to the success he has become. Dean then asks you to go through the same process, to come up with your personal “true why”. The REAL reason why you want to go through what can sometimes be hell, rather than a simplified reason like “It would be nice to be rich.” Knowing your deeper why, will keep you engaged at all times during your difficult journey to achieve it. I would like to add at this point, that it could be a good idea to print out your final why and display it in a conspicuous place in your work space.
Cheers
Phil
Hi Phil – Discovering my WHY turned out to be the key for me to get up and do this job, or rather opportunity, every day. Once I took a deep look at WHY I wanted to do this and kept looking it became clear that this is not only something I needed to do but something I wanted to do. Everyone has their own set of WHYs to do this business, and I believe that once some one captures that why they are hooked. Great post!
